Here are ten tips from my river cruise with EscapeTravel along the #Rhône and #Saône rivers in southern France.

Cruising from #Lyon on #Rhone and #Saone all the way to #Arles was a journey that exceeded all my expectations. Everything comes floating to you: from world heritage sites to quaint market towns, culture, history, and relaxation.

1. Live onboard the 5 star MS Amadeus Provence

The ship itself was small-scale comfort. With room for just over a hundred passengers, it felt intimate and personal. Docking right in the heart of towns meant no tedious transports. I particularly enjoyed the meditative rhythm of the journey. As we floated along, I could relax on deck, watching ancient bridges and castles drift by.

2. Eat!

Meals onboard were a treat. Lunches and dinners were three-course affairs featuring regional specialties paired with local wines. The seating was flexible and social, but I also appreciated having my cabin as a private retreat. Watching the river flow past from my window was a peaceful way to unwind after a day of exploring.

3. Start in Lyon

The journey began in Lyon, a city I’ve visited before and always admired. Standing at #LaConfluence, where the Rhône and Saône rivers meet, is a powerful sight that had stayed with me.

This time, I saw it onboard the MS Amadeus Provence. For anyone who loves intimate travel experiences, charming towns, and wine, river cruising is ideal.

4. Bistros & bouchons

Lyon itself is a food lover’s dream. Its narrow cobblestone streets in Vieux Lyon are lined with bouchons – traditional restaurants with red-checkered tablecloths serving hearty local dishes.

5. Zigzagg on the rivers!

Our route zigzagged along the Rhône and Saône, taking us past vineyards, market towns, and historic landmarks. Stops included Beaune, where we toured the stunning Hospices de Beaune, and Avignon, home to the impressive Palais des Papes. The itinerary also featured the Camargue region, with its unique natural beauty and wildlife.

5. Food markets!

One of the highlights for me was exploring local markets. In Beaune, I strolled through a bustling square filled with stalls selling goat cheese, nougat, freshly baked bread, and ripe fruit. Nearby, a visit to a wine cellar offered the chance to taste exquisite regional wines.

6. Explore at your own pace

The excursions were diverse, catering to both the active traveler and those who prefer a slower pace. Some passengers joined both morning and afternoon tours, while others stayed onboard to relax. I loved the balance of guided activities and free time. From UNESCO World Heritage Sites to local food markets, there was always something new to discover. I skipped one excursion and just strolled along at my own leisure.

7. Travel solo if you’re tempted!

Paying the single cabin supplement is worth it for the experience. Your cabin becomes a cozy sanctuary, and the social atmosphere onboard ensures you’ll never feel lonely.

8. Don’t overlook winter cruises.

Christmas market cruises along the Rhine and to Strasbourg in France are magical and often less crowded.

9. Know your travel style.

Traditional river cruises are perfect for those who enjoy group excursions and social dining. If you prefer more independence, tour operator Escape Travel now offers self-guided options with onboard tips from a cruise director.

10. Enjoy your cruise ship

Looking back, I wish I’d spent even more time simply soaking up the experience onboard. River cruising offers a unique way to see the world, blending the convenience of a floating hotel with the joy of discovering new places. Whether it’s vineyards, historic towns, or the gentle flow of the river itself, everything truly comes to you. It’s a travel style I’ll return to, highly recommend.
